Augusta National Golf Club has been home to the Masters since 1934. The tight, tree-lined course is 7,545 yards long and the pristine, deeply undulating greens demand precision and care. That’s a big reason why Tiger Woods has won five green jackets and has already expressed a desire to return to the 2023 Masters to earn a sixth. The 2023 Masters tournament kicks off on Thursday, April 6, and Woods is a 55-1 contender in Caesars Sportsbook’s 2023 Masters odds.
Rory McIlroy (7-1), Jon Rahm (8-1) and Scottie Scheffler (10-1) battle for the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking and occupy the top three spots on the odds board for golf’s first major championship of the season. SportsLine’s own model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. The model is even up more than $8,600 on its best bets since the restart, tournament after tournament good.
McClure’s model predicted that Rahm would top the standings at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. The model also included JT Poston in his best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet was +5,500, and throughout the tournament, McClure’s best bets came in nearly $1,100. At last year’s Masters, McClure’s model was everywhere. Scheffler’s first major championship win of his career heading into the weekend.
Additionally, McClure’s best bet included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, though he was listed as a huge 40-1 long shot. The model was also all over Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship win at the 2021 US Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still predicted him as winner.
This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors going into the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen huge returns.
As the 2023 Masters field takes shape, SportsLine has simulated the tournament 10,000 times and the results have been surprising. Now go to SportsLine to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2023 Masters Predictions
A big surprise the model calls for at the 2023 Masters: Cameron Smith, a six-time PGA Tour champion and one of the top favorites at the 2023 Masters, stumbles and doesn’t even make the top 10. Smith is the defending Open champion and claimed an event in Australia late last year, but things have been tough for him ever since. He finished 47th in his final event of 2022 before missing the cut in his first event of 2023, the only competitive golf he has played in the past three months.
Despite Smith’s success on the PGA Tour last season, it wasn’t his best year stats-wise, which might indicate he was on the good side of luck. He was outside the top 100 in driving distance and driving accuracy percentage, while placing only 136th in all-important strokes on the tour with the tee stat (-.125). With those struggles, and with only a missed cut to show for his 2023 events, the model is avoiding Smith on his current 2023 Masters bets.
Another surprise: Patrick Cantlay, a 22-1 longshot, is making a strong run for the title. He has a much higher chance of winning than his odds suggest, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The UCLA product made its first Masters appearance as an amateur in 2012 and its 47th-place finish was good enough for low amateur honors.
Now. Cantlay has established himself as one of the most consistent players in the world, ranking #4 in the world after top-five finishes in his last two starts at the Genesis Invitational and Arnold Palmer Invitational. Cantlay made the cut in three of his last four starts in the Masters, finishing ninth and 17th in 2019 and 2020. The eight-time PGA Tour winner is seventh in total strokes won (1,889), so he has the all round game to be a factor at Augusta. See who else you can choose here.
How to make 2023 Masters picks
The model also targets four other golfers at odds of 20-1 or more who will make surprising runs wearing a green jacket. Anyone who supports these longshots can make it big. You can only see the model’s PGA choices here.
